BOXTROLLS SLIDE 'N' SNEAK

OVERVIEW

RED GAMES Co. was tasked with creating a mobile game to build anticipation and brand awareness for Laika’s stop-motion feature film “The Boxtrolls”.

 

The Boxtroll are loveable, timid, cavern dwelling creatures living beneath the town of CheeseBridge. At night they scavenge the streets in search of items to build inventive gadgets, all the while avoiding being seen and captured by the evil “Red Hats”.

CONCEPT

 

Influenced by various side-scrolling, runner and platforming mobile games, the team at RED created a completely unique and natural “slide and launch” one-touch mechanic. This “slide and launch” physics based runner allows players to acrobatically navigate the vibrant streets of Cheesebridge as they collect cogs and tools in order to build handy gadgets and rescue captured Boxtrolls.

 

APPROACH

 

The challenge of this particular brand was staying true to the charming, handcrafted texture of the film and its stop-motion production process. Early on we decided to avoid painting or 3D modeling reproductions of in-film assets, and rather leverage highly textural production photographs and film stills provided by Laika.

CONTRIBUTIONS

 

As lead visual designer I was tasked with creating a brand appropriate style guide using the provided assets. By composting and editing multiple assets together, I successfully created needed elements for each screen’s required UI, props, and messaging. Beyond designing the overall UI system and various in-game high fidelity assets, I also designed entire screen layouts and sequences. I also contributed in rigging 2D animation assets.
